Documentary filmmaking, by its nature, requires shooting a lot of footage that doesn't get used. A doc is different from a scripted film structure because its process is flipped: the script drives the content of a fictional work while the post-production editing drives a lot of the documentary structure. That's simply due to the reality of not knowing what people will say when asked questions on camera. The documentary is driven by interview responses and can change dramatically depending on what is said on camera. During initial shooting and production of The Last Philadelphia, which happened over a period of 10 years, I got some amazing responses. Here are a few that didn't make the final cut for various reasons, but still resonate with the themes of the film.
